Storm expected to hit late Friday, early Saturday, could become hurricane.
The National Hurricane Center has warned residents in the Gulf Coast states to expect heavy rain and flooding this weekend as a severe storm system moves into the region. Potential Tropical Cyclone 3, as they are referring to the system, is expected to affect parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida, bringing heavy subtropical rain, wind, tornadoes, and storm surges.
The heaviest rain could cause flash flooding in southeast Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle. Meteorologists estimate up to a foot of rain for some locations. Further inland, rainfall could reach up to 3 to 5 inches — even 7 in some areas. As the storm moves inland, Alabama, Georgia, and the western Carolinas could experience heavy rain on Sunday. Virginia and the eastern Carolinas may also see rain Monday.
